I'll Do Anything Part 9 There was only two couples left. Trowa and Quatre, Heero and Duo. Everyone else had given up or lost interest in dancing so that they could watch these two pairs. Both couples seemed matched. The tension between the long lost lovers was gone. Any one could see that. The lack of this tension only enhanced their dancing skills, making them a force to be reckoned with. "Final dance." Wu Fei called from behind the turntable. "Pay close attention because the audience will decide the winners." Duo looked up at his Japanese partner. Though neither of them had said a word to each other throughout the contest, both were fully enjoying themselves. For the first time that night, their eyes locked. Duo could feel his own heart pounding just from looking at him. If he didn't know better, he could have sworn it was a dream. His thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice asking if 'Steve' was ready. Followed by 'Andy' and 'Mick'. After a well known 'uh-huh', the dance floor filled with the upbeat pace of Ballroom Blitz by Sweet. It was the first song Heero and Duo ever danced to together. As if on cue, both Heero and Duo turned to face the engaged couple. The were already well into their swing dance routine, but the grins were unmistakable. Colbat met violet. They didn't need to speak to know what the other was thinking. The look of determination was identical in both set of pupils. As the first verse ended and the chorus began, Trowa and Quatre stopped to allow their competition time to show off. Though Quatre and Trowa's dance steps were impressive, they couldn't compare to Duo and Heero's. The latter couple's moves were much more seductive for swing dancing. The spins were a little faster, lifts a tad higher, and dips a bit lower. Throughout the whole song, Duo and Heero's eyes were locked onto each other. They didn't even notice that their rivals had stopped dancing at all. They were unaware of the fact that they were now the only center of attention. Nor did they care. As far as they were concerned right now, nothing existed but them and the song. During that period all was forgotten. The pain and suffering. The regret, but mostly that night. The only thought each of them had was how much they cared for the other. When the song finally ended, the crowd erupted into applaud. "I guess we don't need to ask to know who won this." Quatre called as the clapping ceased. "So, what's our prize?" Duo asked, grinning ear to ear. It was the first time that their eye contact was broken. "Prize?. . ." Quatre slightly scratched the side of his head. "I guess I kind of forgot about getting a prize. . .How about another dance?" He suggested, not knowing what else to offer. Duo looked up at Heero wondering if he would mind having one last go around. "Sure, why not?" Heero shrugged, never taking his eyes from the American. Unexpectantly, the last song was a much slower one. Without a second of awkwardness, Heero slipped his arms around Duo. He pulled the braided man closer to him and their eyes met again. A smile pulled at Duo's lips as he thought he saw a hint of caring in the deep colbat eyes. There was so much he wanted to say, but didn't for fear of what Heero may say. Somehow he felt that his Japanese dance partner felt the same. There was a cloud of confusion brewing in his emotionless eyes. "Heero. . ." Duo started, no longer able to stay silent. His words were interrupted when Relena somehow submerged from the crowd like a snake from under a rock. "Heero, what's going on?" She snapped, placing a gap between the two men. If looks could kill, Heero would have been struck dead in his spot. "He was just dancing. It's no big deal." Duo shot back wishing that the blonde minister would just disappeared. She always had a bad habit of showing up at the last minute. Tears formed in her green eyes as she ignored Duo's comment. "How can you do this Heero?" She whispered and turned to leave. Heero pulled from Duo to follow her. Everything inside Duo wanted to scream to stop him from going after her, but he felt that it wouldn't do any good. He watched the two retreating figures as tears misted over his own eyes. He was wrong. That wasn't caring he saw in Heero's eyes. It had to be pity. Quatre probably told him the miserable life Duo was living right now. "Duo?" He felt a comforting hand on his shoulder. Duo slapped away Quatre's hand and stormed toward the mansion. He wasn't in the mood for Quatre's fake sympathy. "Things didn't go as well as planned." Wu Fei commented as Trowa leaned against one of the amps. "The week isn't over." "As long as Relena's near, it's not going to happen Trowa. Duo looks ready to leave already." "Duo was ready to leave before he even got here." Wu Fei looked at the Latin. "You seriously believe this is going to work?" "You don't?" "In case you haven't noticed, Relena has Heero wrapped around her finger." "Not his heart." Trowa closed his eyes as he noticed Novia sitting at one of the tables alone. "Huh?" "Why don't you go dance with Novia?" "You're kidding right?" Wu Fei laughed as he stared at his friend. "She doesn't seem to have anyone to dance with, and one more dance could be arranged." "What makes you think that I want to dance with her?" "She wants to dance with you. Besides, just imagine how upset Kanissa would be if she saw the two of you dancing." "So that's what this is about. You're just trying
to get back at her for giving you a hard time over the arrangements."
"Sure you don't. Then in that case, you have been around Winner too long." ". . .hn?. . ." "You're trying to play match maker." "Oh yeah?" Trowa looked up at the Chinese DJ. "It's just a dance." Emerald met coal. "I would, but I think she'd prefer you." "Are you going to allow me to say 'no'." Trowa shook his head. "All right." Novia spun her spoon in the glass of water nonchalantly. She was bored out of her mind. She racked her brain for a way to make Wu Fei notice her. Her last few attempts made her seem kind of childish. Maybe her mother was right. Maybe he was out of her league, but it was still fun to try. Who knows, maybe Wu Fei liked childish ambition. She was so deep in thought that she didn't noticed the person heading toward her until he was standing next to her. "Novia," She looked up and was surprised to see Wu Fei. "Would you like to dance?" He asked softly and extended his hand. She couldn't believe that this was happening. Dazed, she accepted the out reached hand and he pulled her to her feet. She couldn't help but stare at him out of shock. The song playing was slow and she was a little nervous of being close to him, but when he slipped his arm around her slender waist, the nervousness disappeared. She rested her hand on his shoulder and their fingers intertwined. "Nervous?" He asked suddenly bringing her from her thoughts. "A little." She admitted and bowed her head from embarrassment of her statement. "You don't have to be." His voice was softer than usual, and she couldn't help but look up. "If anything, I should be the nervous one." "Why's that?" "Because you're mom will probably try to kill me." Novia laughed. Without warning, Wu Fei brought the hand he was holding to his shoulder. He then placed his free hand on her waist and pulled her closer to him. Somehow, Novia found this position much more relaxing as she rested her cheek against his chest. "Are you nervous?" "No." They danced in silence for a few minutes. "Why did you ask me to dance?" Novia asked suddenly looking deeply into his black eyes. "You looked lonely." "I guess Trowa had nothing to do with it." "A little." He admitted. "I can't take too much more of this Q." Duo cried and slumped into one of the chairs. "Duo I'm sorry." "Don't be. It's my fault. I have to give up. I can't keep doing this." "Duo. . ." Quatre hugged his friend. "Things will turn out." "No. I want you and Trowa to stop. Stop trying to get us back together, because it's not working." He pulled from Quatre and placed some distance between them. "I have to give up. That's all there is to it. I can't keep torturing myself like this." "Killing yourself isn't the answer." "I'm not talking about that." Duo turned to face the Arab. "I'll tell Relena in the morning. I'll tell her she has nothing to worry about. Obviously Heero cares a lot for her. Why else would he run after her instead of being with me?" "Duo. . ." "I'll just have to move on. Like Hilde said. I can't keep living in the past. Who knows, maybe Heero and I can be friends later on. I mean after I somehow get over this." "Are you sure that's what you want to do Duo?" "It's my only option Q. It's clear to me now that Heero just doesn't care any more." "When you two were dancing. . ." "I was kidding myself. I wanted so badly that I just imagined everything. Relena and Heero deserve each other. . ." Duo swallowed hard and forced back his tears. "And I'm not going to interfere with them." "Duo. . ." Quatre walked over to him and hugged him. Duo returned the embrace. "I mean, there's a ton of good looking people here. I'm sure I can find someone before the week is up. Right? I mean I'm not such a bad guy, am I?" "No Duo, you're not. You're a good guy. Anyone would have to be crazy not to want you." "Relena, will you stop!" Heero demanded getting a little annoyed at having to chase her. The blonde stopped and spun to face him with tear-filled green eyes. They were somewhere in the middle of the garden. "How could you do that Heero?" "Relena, it was just dancing." He answered softly and closed the gap between the two. "No, Heero. It wasn't just dancing. At least not for you it wasn't. You still care for him. You never stopped. That's why it was more than just a dance." Heero stared at her a moment. "Why are you torturing yourself?" "I don't know." Relena tenderly ran her fingertips across his cheek. "Heero, give him up. Please. I want us to be together. I want us to be happy, and I know you want to be happy too. But the only way to do that is to let go." Heero closed his eyes and leaned into Relena's touch. "I don't know how." He whispered sorrowfully. "I don't know how to forget him Relena." "I can help you Heero. You just have to let me." She wiped away the tears that somehow managed to slip from his eyes. "Do you want me to help you Heero?" The bodyguard swallowed hard before nodding. This was the only way he was going to live. He had to give up Duo. Somehow he felt that Duo had already given up him. "He's giving up." Quatre said as he tenderly drew on Trowa's chest with his index finger. "I tried to talk him out of it, but he's convinced to talk to Relena in the morning. I still say that we should tell the them that their feelings are still there." "Do you think they would believe it? Especially after what has happened in the pass few days? Besides, they both knew what we were doing and they haven't taken any steps to try again." "Trowa, I don't know what to do. I feel so bad." "Sometimes, we just can't do anything." "I hate this." "I know little one. I don't like seeing them like this either, but. . ." Just at that moment, the door to the room opened and Wu Fei appeared. He absorbed the scene. Trowa was laying on the bed, Quatre sitting on his stomach. "I'll be back later." The roommate said softly and closed the door. Quatre's face fell and Trowa could sense the guilt that was arising. "Quatre, I know things aren't going as we planned. But maybe something good will come of this." "How can you say that? As of now, Heero and Relena are going to go with their plans, and poor Duo is going to return to his empty scrap yard." "Maybe now that scrap yard won't be so empty." Quatre appeared confused. "Duo said himself, that he was going to try and get over Heero. Well, maybe once he does, he'll find someone else." "But they're made for one another." "You only say that because you've never seen Duo with anyone else. Maybe he and Heero aren't meant to be after all." "What? Didn't you see them tonight Trowa? Didn't you see the way they were looking at each other?" "Yes, but. . ." "Then why are you suddenly against the ideal?" "I'm not saying I'm against it. I'm just saying 'what if.'" "Well, if that's how you feel about Duo and Heero, I'm afraid to ask if you feel the same about us." He pushed off the Latin and stood up. "What? Where did that come from?" "Well, we haven't really had a history of relationships Trowa. So who's to say we're only perfect together because we haven't been with any one else." "Quatre, we're different." "How? How are we any different than them?" Trowa rubbed his eyes a moment before answering. It was the first time he had ever made Quatre mad at him. "Because we both work to try and make our relationship healthy. Heero, obviously, isn't trying." "How do you know he isn't trying? Do you know what they do in their room at night?" "If they did anything, Heero wouldn't have went after Relena tonight. He would have stayed with Duo." "Has it ever occurred to you that Heero might be afraid? As I recalled, we were almost broken up because someone was scared." "I don't doubt that Heero is a little scared. That's probably what's causing him to be so cold toward Duo. You can't force them to be together. If they want to be together, they have to do it on their own." After this was said, the door to their room opened and Duo was about to enter. Neither of the men noticed that the door was cracked. "You're being very hypocritical tonight." Trowa looked up at his lover as he sat up. He couldn't help but wonder what happened. "Just because I try to look at all aspects?" "No, because one minute your talking like you believe this will work and then the next your talking about the 'what ifs'. Make up your mind Trowa, because I can't do this alone." "You've been pretty much doing this yourself." "Pardon me?" "Come on Quatre, I told you that I didn't want this in the first place." "But you agreed." "Only because I was seduced." "So you're abandoning me?" "What's gotten into you?" "I just don't think that it's right for you to drag me this far and then quit. Just like that. Just because things aren't going the way we want them too." "I dragged you?" "Yes. You allowed me to go this far under false pretenses." "Look, it's not like it's something we can fix." Trowa stated softly and stood up. He walked over to Quatre and attempted to hug him. "No." Quatre cried and pulled from his partner. "No! Hugging isn't going to make up for this Trowa." Duo's eyes widen in surprise. He couldn't believe it. Trowa and Quatre were fighting! He never heard them fight before. Part of him felt that he should leave them alone. The other part wanted to know what's going to happen. "Quatre, you can't control this any more. You lost. You need to accept that." "No! You said yourself that one mustn't give up until the end." "A relationship can't work with only one person. Isn't that what you said?" "Are you still in Trowa? Yes or no!" "Quatre. . ." "Yes or no?" Trowa stared at him in silence. "Fine!" Quatre glared at the emeralds a moment. "Then I don't need you any more." He turned to leave. As he flung open the door he was a little surprised to find Duo standing there. "Hey Q." Duo said nervously hoping that they didn't realize that he had been there the whole time. The anger was still evident in Quatre's blue eyes. "And Duo's staying in here tonight." He glared back at Trowa before leaving. "Is everything okay between the two of you?" Duo asked suddenly while staring at the taller man. Sighing deeply, Trowa pushed by the American guest and chased after Quatre. He couldn't stand knowing that he upset his lover. Duo turned to watch as Trowa caught up to Quatre half way down the hall. Their voices were low. So low that Duo couldn't hear them. "Quatre, I'm sorry. You're right. I agreed to be a part of this and I'll stay with you until the end." "Trowa, don't you understand how important this is?" The Arab's voice dropped even further so that only Trowa could hear him. "Duo is my best friend. I don't want to lose him." "I know Quatre." Trowa whispered and gently wiped the tears that were spilling. "I'm being selfish right now and I shouldn't." "Can we talk about this in the morning?" He looked into Trowa's eyes. "I'm kind of tired and cranky. I guess that's why I was snapping at you. I'm sorry about that." "It's okay angel." Trowa gently kissed his forehead. "Goodnight Trowa." Quatre hugged the Latin closely and kissed his jaw. "Just one question." Trowa seized the smaller man's hand before he left. "What?" "Why isn't Duo staying in his room?" "One, I'm afraid he'll do something to himself. Two, because he doesn't think he can stand being close to Heero right now." "Oh. Goodnight Quatre." They brushed their lips together quickly before parting. Trowa watched the blonde until he turned a corner. Once out of sight, Trowa turned to return to his own room. Duo was still in the doorway. He had watched the entire scene, though he couldn't hear a word they said to each other. How was it that they always seem to part on good terms? Duo could only figure that it was because they really loved each other. Unlike him and Heero used to be. They used to fight ninety percent of the time that they were together. The only reason they really slept together was because they were both exhausted after the wonderful make up sex. ~ * ~
